The story of me In 500 words or so.
By Stephen Knutson
I was born in a small town on the Puget Sound. A little saw mill, paper mill sulfur smelling village called Everett, Washington. My parents separated early and I lived with my father until I was old enough to live on my own. I graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1963. Las Vegas was a town the size of Flagstaff then. During the Vietnam War I was drafted into the US Army while attending Art Center College of Design in West Hollywood. I was stationed at Fort Buckner on Okinawa Island and attached to the US Air Force ATCO at Kadena Air Force Base. I was discharged in Dec. 1968. I traveled across this grand country to look for a home and I found Flagstaff in 1970. I attended NAU on the GI Bill and I graduated with a B.S. degree in education. My passion for study was the flow of graceful beauty. I found that flow in the Arts and Architecture. I still enjoy color and movement in design, painting, and sculpture. The day I graduated from NAU I started working in Fox Glen, building houses or as we say “ pounding nails” as a carpenter. In those days we built houses from the foundation to the door knobs. I have worked in Norway, Switzerland and Italy. I began to teach talented and gifted students in fall of 1992. My teaching experience includes 7 years on the Navajo Reservation. I married in 1988 and we have 2 sons whom we love very much. The younger boy is taking this year off and my older son is attending CCC these days. I guess you could say my family is invested in this community because we and our children live, school and work here and we love our community
