What does building a local living economy mean?
First we must learn to buy locally. We must learn to consider every time we spend a dollar: does this create a good job locally? Does it lose a job or send a job overseas?
We can build a sustainable local economy by investing our money locally.
Say we invest in greenhouses that are heated with the sun and powered with solar energy, that would put our people to work (at living wages) building the greenhouses and installing the solar panels. It would put people to work in the greenhouses growing organic produce for our homes and our restaurants and our stores. That is how we begin to build a local sustainable economy. Profits from this enterprise could finance its growth until we could export produce to neighboring communities like Winslow, Williams, Page, and Tuba City.
We could do the same thing installing solar/wind power in our city. Invest in a municipal power company putting our people to work installing panels and maintaining them until our whole city is powered with inexpensive clean energy. That would make us a mecca for smart eco-friendly high tech start up companies that would want to plug their laptops into our clean energy grid. It would also draw tourist to our city to see the sustainable eco- park we have created.
